The condition of vintage rugs in particular varies greatly depending on how they are used and stored, so skilled craftsmen are responsible for detailed checking and maintenance.
Once the rugs reach Japan, they undergo a final check by our staff and are ready to be loved for a long time before being presented to customers as "Layout quality" rugs.

Layout's Rugs
Layout Values
A partner in daily life, always by your side. Layout strives to deliver the experience of life after acquiring a rug.
The feeling of placing your favorite rug in your room for the very first time, the comforting texture and the cheerful mood it brings when gazing upon it. And as time goes by, you find yourself admiring the rug’s beauty and the memories that accumulate with each passing day.
Layout understands the emotional value of a rug and strives to introduce it as a partner in daily life, helping customers create a comfortable and memorable living space.
Transparency
When introducing customers to rugs, Layout places a strong emphasis on communicating information in a “simple and clear” manner. We strive to convey both positive and negative aspects of each rug to foster trust and help customers make informed decisions about their rug purchases.
About Old Rugs
Layout also offers preowned rugs, and we introduce all of them as “old rugs” without labeling them as vintage or antique.
Price Labeling
At Layout, we believe that the excitement customers experience when they encounter a rug, and the comfort they feel when using it in their daily life, are the true values we offer.
That’s why we don’t use double pricing tactics like “regular price and special price” for our rugs. We don’t want the initial value customers feel when they encounter a rug to be tied to discounts.
Instead, we introduce the value of each rug we offer as our ideal price to our customers.
We understand that it can be difficult to understand the true value of handmade rugs, so we strive to convey this information with transparency.
Layout’s Rugs
Meeting a Rug Begins with Meeting People
Although there are countless rug stores in the local region, we have found that the stores we feel most drawn to have something in common: the people. These are the stores with owners or staff who share similar values and personalities with Layout – they are a little playful and friendly.
Meeting a rug always starts with meeting people.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Layout takes great care in ensuring that the rugs we acquire in the local region are properly cleaned and maintained before they are delivered to Japan. Layout works with trusted and reliable partners who accompany them to purchase rugs and handle the cleaning and maintenance process.
Health Check For Rugs
Upon arrival in Japan, Layout’s staff conducts a thorough health check on each rug to ensure it meets our high standards. Any rug that fails to pass the check will be sent to our trusted local partners for cleaning and repair before delivery to our customers. Our commitment to delivering Japanese quality is unwavering, even for rugs made overseas.
1.Inspecting every rug for loose piles, holes, and overall cleaning quality.
2.The edges of the rug are susceptible to damage over time, so we meticulously examine them before delivery.
3.Using a needle detector, we search for any foreign objects embedded in the rug that may not be visible to the naked eye.
4.We also use our sense of smell to detect any remaining odors from previous use. If necessary, we have the rug cleaned again locally to ensure its freshness.
Beginning of a Long-Lasting Relationship
The rugs that Layout discovered are eagerly waiting to meet their new owners. Our role is to assist in the beginning of a long-lasting relationship between you and your rugs. We aim to help facilitate the story of your life together, starting from the moment you meet your rug for the first time.
Tribal Rug
Tool for nomads
Tribal rugs have long been an important tool for nomads who lived with goats and sheep. Tribal rugs have a variety of uses as sacks for carrying food and tools, as walls to separate spaces within tents, and as tent doors and floors. Tribal rugs are supposed to be categorized by each tribe, but we also introduce city and village rugs that reveal their locality as a tribal rug too.
Originally, tribal rugs were divided by tribe, but Layout also introduces city rugs, village rugs, and other rugs that are rooted in the local area as tribal rugs.
Wide range of designs
Tribal rugs come in a wide variety of designs, as they usually take design inspiration from everything they see in their daily lives, including livestock, climate, tribal culture, and the surrounding landscape.
Unique personality of handmade rug
Among the many handmade rugs, tribal rug stands out the weaver’s individuality, and even two rugs weaved in the same design of the same tribe reflects artisan’s taste. Weavers may use different threads than the original or may stop weaving mid-way.
Although it may appear to most people to be a mistake or imperfection, the underlying beauty of handcrafted tribal rugs is the nomad people’s free spirit and personality.
Interesting Styling
The appeal of tribal rugs is that you can design a variety of spaces. Can be used in living room, dining room, kitchen, etc.
A large tribal rug can have a big impact on the look of your room.
Tribal carpets can be styled freely like fashion without being bound by rules.
Collect your favorite patterns and layer them to create a beautiful sense of unity.
Placing the rug on a similar colored flooring will make the rug’s pattern more vivid and defined.
Enjoy how a single rug can change the entire room’s atmosphere.
It is also a good idea to choose the color of your bed sheets from the carpet.
Gabbeh
Gabbeh the Nomad’s rug
Gabbeh has always been an important tool for nomads. The method of shearing their sheep and goats to make thread and weaving it is still a valuable part of their culture.
Life with Gabbeh
The fluffy Gabbeh fits well with the lifestyle of someone who spend a lot of time on the floor, so it is recommended for those who want to stay more comfortable, such as reading books, watching movies or chatting on Gabbeh.
Enjoy the fluffy cushion underneath your feet.
Best for the little nap in cozy afternoon.
Interesting Styling
Cozy and natural atmosphere of Gabbeh goes well with various styles of interior.
Each Gabbeh pattern is unique, making your private space special.
The unique Gabbeh design can also blend in easily with modern styles.
The soft and gentle properties of Gabbeh can also go well with the Japanese-style rooms.
It’s like laying an artwork on the front door.
Q&A
What are the materials?
Most of the rugs Layout buys locally are made of wool. Cotton is also used for the warp.
What are the characteristics of wool rugs?
It’s soundproofing, and it also catches dust on the ground, preventing dust from being blown up.
Are rugs too hot to use in summer?
Wool keeps the rug’s surface temperature around 20°C, so it will keep you comfortable all season long without getting hot or cold. You can spend all seasons comfortably!
How to clean up?
Usually, vacuuming is enough! Often the cleaning robot will get on it, too.If you spill something, wipe it up immediately!Sometimes on a nice day, dry your rug in the shade. The wool will love it.
What to do if you want to wash it? Can I use the washing machine?
We don’t recommend washing them yourself. If you need to wash your rug, please ask a cleaning service that specializes in rugs or Layout. We recommend that you have your rugs cleaned every 10 years.
Can I expose the rug to direct sunlight?
A:we recommend avoiding direct sunlight, as it may cause fading due to sunburn. When drying, hang it in the shade.
What should I do if I stain my rug?
Wool contains a lot of oil, so it repels moisture, so if you spill coffee or juice on it, wipe it off immediately and the stain will not stand out so much. If it gets soaked, you can use shampoo to clean it.( Please ask our staff for specific care instructions.)
Do rugs get worn out after long use?
Rugs made in Iran have high raising power, so they do not wear out easily.
