What the staff thought about while redecorating
Person in charge: Staff I
November 8th was the beginning of winter, so according to the calendar, it's already winter. When you realize the seasons have changed, you want to redecorate your room. I had a long weekend so I decided to give my room a winter makeover.
Our house has two rooms: a Western-style dining kitchen and a Japanese-style bedroom. First, we set up the stove in the dining room. My favorite way to spend winter mornings is to warm myself up on the side table and drink a cup of soup. We keep the same rug at our feet in the dining room all year round. In the bedroom, we changed the bedding covers to thicker ones, changed the slippers to fluffy types, and brought out a lap blanket.
Rug makeover
I didn't move any of the larger rugs, but I moved the accent size rug from the bedroom to the living room to add some variety. I actually feel like if I had another slightly larger rug, the room would have a better feel, but right now all I have is this one and a doormat.
I ended the redecorating with a small regret that I should have brought the other piece from my parents' house.
It ended up being a bit of a half-finish, and now I desperately want a rug by my bed.
So, that was a long introduction, but for this month's column I've carefully chosen a rug from the store that I would like to buy for my bedroom this winter.
What should I choose?
The reason I want a rug by my bed is simply for aesthetic reasons, but there's another reason too. I'm getting a low table at the end of the month, so I'm thinking of putting it by my bed and using it as a work space. Until now, I've not lived on the floor, so I've prioritized appearance when choosing rugs, and have always chosen tribal rugs, but if I'm going to be spending time on the floor, a generously sized, thick rug is ideal.
So, this time I narrowed it down to these two rugs from the store.
The Gabbeh, measuring 150cm x 100cm, is a slightly larger accent size. It may be difficult to imagine how big it is, but it's just the right size for a woman to sit on the floor. Since it's Gabbeh, it's thick enough that you don't need a floor chair. If I were the type of person who was serious about getting up early in the morning, I'm sure I'd even use it as a yoga mat.
Tips for choosing colors
The bedroom is covered with tatami mats, and the fabric around the bed is a bright blue, so I chose a color that would complement it. I think a beige rug would give a bright impression, while a blue rug would give a calm impression. They have simple yet unique designs, and I really like both, but this time I'm considering the beige one because it won't look too dark when combined with the dark brown floor in another room.
As an aside, Japanese-style rooms tend to be more decorative than Western-style rooms, and use a lot of colors and materials, so I recommend adding a rug with a simple design to create a more calming, neat look.
Tree of Life
What I like about this rug is that it has a mature feel thanks to the limited number of colors, and the bold design that doesn't let it become dull. In particular, there is a large tree painted across the entire screen. It is the familiar "Tree of Life" motif from Gabbeh, and I was drawn to the wildness of its branches. There are various ways of expressing the meaning of the "Tree of Life," but what they all have in common is that it represents the broad flow of time, including the changing of the seasons and the rebirth of life. It is not a real tree, but an imaginary tree that exists in the hearts of all of us. It's a rather romantic story.
Floor plan and consultation
Being a worrier, I was curious about how big the rug I chose would be when I laid it out in the room, so I actually wrote it down on the floor plan of the room.

Just to be sure, I confirmed that it would also fit in the free space next to the dining room. It might be nice to place it in front of the bookshelf and create a little reading nook. By that time, I might even be able to put a larger rug in the bedroom and cover the entire floor in rugs. My imagination is running wild. Of course, it's also the perfect size when placed next to the bed.
Now you can choose your Gabbeh with confidence and start living comfortably on the floor. It's an ordinary room, but I hope it will give you some ideas to enrich your indoor life in the fall and winter.
