New staff member Y's first choice
Hello to everyone who regularly visits the Layout website. I'm Y, a new staff member.
I'm originally from Kumamoto in Kyushu, and this year marks my fifth year since moving to Tokyo after graduating from university.
I worked for an apparel company for three years, then spent a year devoting myself to music on my own, which is where I am today.
This time, I would like to share with you my first experience choosing a rug shortly after joining the company.
Please bear with me for a while.
Moving and decluttering
I actually just moved in March of this year. At that time, I made a big decision: decluttering. Approaching the latter half of my 20s, I wanted to bridge the gap between what I own and how I think, and clarify what I really need. This was the time to take time to face my possessions. As a result, the lingering memories and youthful lust that I had in my new room were gone, and only the necessary present remained.
After decluttering, I have a clear idea of my own shopping criteria for the future. The criteria are different for consumables and luxury items, so this time I will focus on the latter.

Future shopping standards
① Will it still be around in 10 years?
② Can you provide a reason based on the past?
I narrowed it down to these two points.
Number 1 is self-explanatory. Is it relevant to what you want to achieve in life? Can you share in life changes like marriage? Can you answer yes to questions about your future life? What you left behind is for the present, but what you'll be adding from now on is for the future as far as you can imagine.
Second, whether it fits the sensibilities cultivated from past experiences that cannot be changed. Everyone is different in terms of their favorite subjects, sports, favorite music, movies they have watched, books they have read, and people they have interacted with. I think the values that arise from these differences are strongly reflected in clothing, hairstyles, fashion, and interior design. Another way of saying this is whether it can express one's background.
With these criteria in mind, it's time to choose your rug.
What to look for in a rug
Since no two one-of-a-kind rugs are the same, you want to find the one that you're truly satisfied with. If you solidify your image too much during the preparation stage, it will take away the fun of visiting the store, so it's best to just have a rough idea of color, size, and design.
Accent size that can be placed anywhere
A color that isn't too bold
Continuity and regularity in design

With these things in mind, I chose this. No.71710
Reason for choosing
The item I chose was a tribal rug from the Baluchi tribe.
The pattern is detailed, and the off-white fur used as an accent shines brightly. The overall tone is dark, so when you lay it in a room, it harmonizes with the other furniture and also makes a moderate presence.
The red, black, and yellow color scheme is the same as the German flag, which is perfect for when I started collecting vintage European clothing. And this pattern. It can be worn vertically or horizontally, and the handwritten feel seen in 1980s Stüssy items is a real hit. The size is just right, at 103cm x 55cm, so it's easy to rearrange.

Designing your life through rugs
If you think too deeply about your purchases every time, you'll likely put off having fun, so it's important to set standards you can return to when you're unsure.
If you know yourself well, you will naturally know what you should own.
As I decluttered, I changed my attitude towards the things I own and chose this rug based on new criteria.
It's a piece that suits my tastes, which I can't fully describe, and one that I want to spend my life with. I'm sure this piece will have a big influence on the interior items I choose to add to my collection.
Instead of choosing a table or sofa, which are essential in daily life, we decided to start with a rug. Because it is a luxury item, we can freely express our identity.
